How to Connect Dropbox and Create a Gallery

Imagely’s Dropbox integration lets you pull photos directly from your Dropbox account into any NextGEN Gallery. No app authorization or API key is required; Dropbox’s built-in file chooser handles everything. Selected files are downloaded to your server and added to your gallery automatically.

Step 1: Enable the Dropbox Feature

Before using Dropbox as an image source, verify that the feature is active.

Go to Imagely → Features in your WordPress admin sidebar.

Locate the Dropbox card. If the button reads Activate, click it to turn the feature on. If it already shows Deactivate (as above), the feature is ready to use; continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Create a New Dropbox Gallery

Go to Imagely → Galleries and click Add Gallery (or the + button).

In the Add Gallery dialog, type a name for your gallery, then click the Dropbox tile as your image source.

Step 3: Choose Files from Dropbox

After selecting Dropbox, a Choose from Dropbox button appears in the gallery editor.

Click Choose from Dropbox. A Dropbox file picker popup opens; this is Dropbox’s own interface, so you sign in to Dropbox directly in the popup (your credentials are never sent to Imagely or WordPress). Browse your files, select the photos you want to import, and click Choose.

Imagely downloads the selected images from Dropbox and adds them to the gallery immediately.

Tip: You can click Choose from Dropbox again at any time to add more images to the same gallery.

Step 4: Save and Publish Your Gallery

Once your images are imported, you can manage it as a regular gallery choosing the display type and settings. Your gallery is now ready to embed anywhere on your site using the Imagely block or shortcode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to authorize Imagely to access my Dropbox account?
No. Imagely uses Dropbox’s standard file chooser popup, which Dropbox hosts. You sign in to Dropbox directly in the popup and select files; Imagely only receives the download links for the specific files you pick.

What file formats are supported?
JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP. Other file types (PDF, videos, etc.) are ignored during import.

Is there a file size limit?
Images are limited by your server’s maximum upload size (the same limit that applies to WordPress’s media library upload).

Can I add Dropbox images to an existing gallery?
Yes. Open any existing gallery from Imagely → Galleries, then click Choose from Dropbox to add images from Dropbox to that gallery.

Do imported images stay in sync with Dropbox?
No. Imagely downloads a local copy at the time of import. If you update or replace the file in Dropbox, you need to re-import it to update the gallery.

Can I use images from a shared Dropbox folder?
Yes. As long as the files appear in your Dropbox account (including shared folders and team folders), they will be available in the file picker.
