Managing Galleries on a WordPress Multisite

Imagely works on WordPress Multisite. Each site in your network keeps its own galleries, and the network administrator controls a few settings for everyone.

Activating the plugin

Go to Network Admin > Plugins > Installed Plugins and click Network Activate on NextGEN Gallery. This makes it available to every site in the network.

If you would rather give it to only some sites, leave it network-deactivated and activate it individually from each site’s own Plugins screen.

Network settings

As a network administrator, go to Network Admin > Gallery > Network settings. The page is titled Network Options and holds five settings that apply across the network.

Gallery path

The default folder where each site’s galleries are stored. Use the %BLOG_ID% placeholder to give every site its own directory:

wp-content/uploads/sites/%BLOG_ID%/nggallery/

This is the recommended value. %BLOG_ID% is replaced with each site’s ID, so site 3’s galleries live in wp-content/uploads/sites/3/nggallery/.

The path must stay inside your uploads area. Paths that point outside it, or that contain .., are rejected when you save and you will see an error instead of a confirmation.

Enable upload quota check

Applies WordPress’s per-site upload quota to gallery uploads. This only works when the gallery folder sits inside the site’s own uploads directory – which is what the recommended %BLOG_ID% path gives you.

Enable zip upload option

Lets site owners upload a ZIP file of images instead of adding them one at a time.

Enable import function

Lets site owners import images from folders already on the server, using Import Folder in the Imagely uploader.

When this is off, subsite users cannot use Import Folder in the Imagely admin, and the matching REST API requests are refused. Save this page and then reload the Imagely screen for the change to take effect.

Enable roles/capabilities

Lets site owners change Imagely roles and capabilities for other authors on their own site.

Click Update to save.

Who can change the gallery path

This differs by where you are in the network:

Subsite administrators see the path but cannot edit it. This is deliberate: it stops one site’s uploads from being pointed at another site’s folder. If a subsite genuinely needs a different path, a network administrator can set it.

Each site keeps its own galleries

Galleries, albums, tags and settings all belong to the individual site. A gallery created on one site does not appear on another, and each site’s administrators manage their own.
